It has been nearly one month since the Clewiston City Commission voted to suspend private parties with bounce houses and other inflatables from all city parks except Sugarland Park.
The commission will revisit the issue at their next meeting on Monday, Aug. 17, when city staff members come back with recommendations on whether or not to allow inflatables on city property in the future.
The topic could also be broached at their workshop tonight at 5 p.m.
Since the July 13 meeting, residents have taken to social media to speak out against the decision, including one local party rental business owner.
A Facebook group titled “Support Inflatables in Clewiston” was created last month. So far, over 600 people have liked the group, which calls for residents to stand up for inflatables on city property and against “big city policies in our hometown.”
“Their decision will have an effect on school celebrations, small festivals and non-profit organization events at public parks. … If you want to keep Clewiston parks joyful, come and support our effort to keep inflatables/parties at our parks,” wrote the group on Tuesday.
Commissioners say the decision was made initially due to the liability of accidents occurring on city property with the use of inflatables. In June, the city asked local vendors to take out a $1-million insurance policy with the city’s name on it, and had residents renting inflatables sign a hold harmless agreement to further reduce liability.
When the subject was revisited in July, the city’s attorney and insurance company still could not recommend allowing inflatables on city property. The commission then decided to suspend the use of inflatables on city property except at Sugarland Park until staff members could come back with recommendations at the next meeting on Aug. 17.
