Back-to-school shopping deals and giveaways in Clewiston

School starts early this year on Aug. 10, giving parents two more weekends for back-to-school shopping before the first bell rings. But parents still have the chance to catch some back-to-school savings and giveaways.

Florida’s annual Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday begins at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 7 and ends 11:59 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 16.

During these 10 days, parents can shop tax-free for clothing, footwear and certain accessories selling for less than $100 per item; certain school supplies selling for $15 or less per item; personal computers and certain computer-related accessories on the first $750 of the sales price when purchased for personal use.

Several school supply drives will also be held in Clewiston just in time for the start of school.

Florida Community Health Center, located at the intersection of South W.C. Owen and Ventura Avenue, will hold a school supply giveaway on Saturday, Aug. 8 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Kids can come pick up a backpack filled with school essentials like glue, scissors, crayons and markers.

A local store is also hosting a school supply giveaway for the first time. Guines Jewelry and Pawn joined forces with Blue Cane Cafe in Montura to give out drawstring bags filled with school supplies on Aug. 8 beginning at 10 a.m. until all supplies run out. Guines Jewelry and Pawn is located at 114 South W.C. Owen Avenue.

The supply drive held annually at the Hendry County Sheriff’s Community Fun Day may not take place this year since Community Fun Day, scheduled for Aug. 8, was canceled. It has not yet been determined whether the organization that normally gives out supplies will hold a drive elsewhere.
