Clewiston offers code enforcement amnesty

CLEWISTON — Clewiston city officials are offering the Code Enforcement Amnesty Program as an incentive to property owners who have outstanding, unaddressed code enforcement violations to bring their property into compliance with city codes and obtain a quick reduction of the outstanding liens against their properties.

Officials approved the method for reducing or removing liens against private property imposed because of city code violations last summer. It began Oct. 1, 2017, but applications will be taken only until July 1, 2018. Both commercial and residential property owners are eligible to participate. Utility liens, however, are not eligible for reduction, and there must be no active code enforcement violations on any other of the owner’s property within the city.

Lien debts can be settled only by following the city’s program guidelines, which can be viewed via the Clewiston municipal website at www.clewiston-fl.gov/egov/documents/1515079385_31793.pdf. The guidelines include property owners filling out an application form and participation agreement, plus allowing their property to be inspected by city code enforcers. Forty percent of the lien’s face value is the maximum that must be paid.

The program is being administered by the city’s Community Improvement Division. The hours of availability are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, except weekends and legal holidays.

City residents can schedule an appointment to discuss specific information or amounts owed by contacting the Community Improvement Division at 141 Central Ave., Clewiston, FL 33440 or by calling 863-983-1454.
