Detailed inspection of S-310 navigation lock scheduled inspection will close the Clewiston Lock for two days

CLEWISTON — A comprehensive inspection of the S-310 navigation lock near Clewiston will require the lock to be closed to boat traffic Jan. 10 and 11.

The S-310 navigation lock provides for navigation to and from Lake Okeechobee and the C-21 Canal, which is the site of the Clewiston Public Boat Ramp. The lock also provides access to marinas, commercial fishing facilities and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Tug Boat Basin of the Industrial Canal.

The work will begin on Tuesday, Jan. 10, and conclude in time to resume boat traffic by the following Thursday, Jan. 12. Operation of the lock will not be possible during the inspection to ensure the safety of the divers.

S-310 was originally constructed in 1934 as hurricane-gated structure No. 2 on the Herbert Hoover Dike. In 1977, it was modified and converted to a reinforced concrete navigational boat lock. The inspection will provide engineers with detailed information regarding the condition of the lock so that it can continue to provide reliable service.
