Accident claims Clewiston man’s life

CLEWISTON — A Clewiston man died in a fiery crash on U.S. 27 on Monday afternoon, after a tire and rim detached from his truck, causing him to lose control of the vehicle.


According to the Florida Highway Patroal Sgt. R. Dooley’s report, Cody Madison Bunting, 23, of Clewiston, was driving a 1999 Ford F-150 truck northbound on U.S. 27 near mile marker 85 around 3:30 p.m., when for an unknown reason, the truck’s left front tire and rim detached. Mr. Bunting lost control of the vehicle, which spun counterclockwise over the grass median and into the southbound traffic.

Juan Francisco Delgado, 54, of Homestead, was driving a 2006 Freightliner truck, southbound on U.S. 27 just before the crash. According to the FHP report, Mr. Delgado swerved into the outside lane to attempt to avoid a collision.

The left side of the F-150 collided with the front of the Freightliner, according to the FHP report. The F-150 came to final rest in the southbound lanes, facing east. The Freightliner came to rest against the F-150, facing south. The F-150 and the cab of the Freightliner became engulfed in flames, the report states.

Mr. Bunting died at the scene, according to the FHP report.

Mr. Delgado was able to exit his vehicle unharmed.

According to the FHP report, the accident is under investigation.
