Bicyclist fatality on U.S. 27 in Clewiston

CLEWISTON — A 59-year-old bicyclist died from injuries sustained in an accident with a car on Saturday, Dec. 30.

A Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) press release stated Jose Portan Vanegaz 59, of Clewiston, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

According to the press release a bicyclist, Mr. Vanegaz, was attempting to cross the westbound side of U.S. 27 and rode his bicycle in front of a 2012 Chevrolet Malibu driven by Tatiana Krystel Soto, 31, of Miami, at the intersection of U.S. 27 and North San Jose Street at approximately 11:23 p.m.

The bicycle was equipped with a forward facing and rear facing reflector, but no lights.

The front of the car collided with the right side of the bicycle.

The accident remains under investigation by Trooper G. Slafer, FHP Crash Investigator and Trooper Corporal G. Kantor, FHP Homicide Investigator.
