The body of missing girl Courtney Adams was found by Highlands County deputies on Aug. 29, according to a press release issued today by the Highlands County Sheriff’s Office.
Her body was reportedly found by sheriff’s deputies and Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission officers who responded to reports of a suspicious bag floating in the Lake Carrie canal in Lake Placid.
Law enforcement officers reportedly retrieved the bag from the canal and found the body of a white female, later identified as Courtney Adams, 27, originally of Clewiston.
Adams was reported missing on Aug. 27 after her family had not heard from her in roughly a week.
Deputies with the Highlands County Sheriff’s Office have arrested three people since discovering Adams’ body on Saturday, including a man detectives reported Adams could have been with when she was reported missing: Shawn Jones, 37, of Lake Placid.
Jones was arrested and charged with failure to report a death to the medical examiner, culpable negligence to inflict harm, giving false information to a law enforcement officer regarding a missing person, abuse of a dead human body and tampering with physical evidence. He was released on $7,500 bond.
Deputies also arrested Dan Hermance, 24, of Lake Placid, and Turk Lowe, 35, of Lake Placid.
According to the release, Hermance reportedly resisted deputies when they asked for his phone to get a search warrant to obtain information contained in it. He was charged with resisting an officer without violence and was released on $500 bond.
Lowe was reportedly at Jones’ residence when deputies arrived smoking what appeared to be crack cocaine. He was arrested and charged with possession of cocaine, possession of a controlled substance without a prescription and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was released on $2,500 bond.
