Clewiston Deputy ambushed and shot

CLEWISTON — At this time Hendry County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate the shooting that occurred last night, March 9, in Clewiston.

Further investigation has revealed that at approximately 10 p.m. Hendry County Deputies were out at M&M Store located at 944 Kentucky Ave. speaking to individuals that were in the area. While there Deputy Sheriff Jayson Moorehead had been speaking with an individual.

At that time the shooter fired four shots at the deputy striking him in the upper left arm. Investigators are continuing to follow up on leads that are coming in regarding the shooting. The deputy was transported to a trauma center and is reported to be in stable condition.

“We are very fortunate he wasn’t seriously injured,” Hendry County Sheriff Steve Whidden said. “We’re still investigating, and will do everything we possibly can to bring about an arrest and conviction.”
Investigators are questioning a second man who may have information leading to the arrest of the shooter.
