Flaghole Road crash results in fatality

CLEWISTON — A 53-year-old Clewiston woman died from injuries sustained in a single vehicle accident on Flaghole Road in Clewiston.

A Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) press release stated that Zunilda L. Ruiz Diaz, was driving a 2011 Chevrolet Aveo on Monday, Jan. 1.

According to the release, at approximately 2:57 p.m., Ms. Diaz was traveling south on Flaghole Road, north of Kilpatrick Road, when for reasons unknown, she failed to maintain control of the vehicle. The vehicle traveled off the roadway onto the west grass shoulder. The vehicle traveled over a grass berm and entered a water filled canal.

Ms. Diaz was extricated from the canal and transported to Hendry Regional Medical Center in Clewiston where she later died.

Ms. Diaz was wearing a seatbelt.

No charges were made at the time of the press release.

The accident was investigated by Trooper Rodson Fleurant, FHP Crash Investigator and Corporal George R. Kanor, FHP Homicide Investigator.
