A Clewiston man was arrested last month and charged with felony murder after he was accused of stabbing another man in a church parking lot, Clewiston Police reported.

Encarnacion Gonzales Jr., 26, was arrested on Sept. 17 after witnesses placed him at the scene of a large fight that occurred in the parking lot of Iglesia Vida Nueva on Sept. 14 at around 11 a.m, according to a report released by the Clewiston Police Department.

Two individuals involved in the altercation reported that Gonzales exited a dark blue or black Nissan sedan while a large group of people were allegedly fighting in the church’s parking lot.

According to the individuals’ statements to police, Gonzales reportedly walked towards one of the women with a knife in one hand and his other hand clenched in a fist.

The woman’s husband told police he stepped between his wife and Gonzales and reportedly punched Gonzales in the face to try to stop him from advancing. That is when Gonzales allegedly stabbed the man in the stomach, the report states.

The fight reportedly started between two women, one of whom belongs to the church, but more people reportedly joined in to help on both sides. Gonzales was reportedly not involved in the original altercation.

According to the police report, Gonzales stayed inside his car watching the fight take place before stepping out and walking towards the crowd, allegedly with a switchblade-style knife in hand.

The victim was treated for a stab wound to his stomach at Hendry Regional Medical Center.

Three days after the altercation, on Sept. 17, police arrested Gonzales and charged him with attempted felony murder. Gonzales is currently being held in the Hendry County Jail on a $250,000 bond.
