Police car chase ends with gun shot

CLEWISTON — On Thursday, Jan. 19, at approximately 10:23 p.m., officers with the Clewiston Police Department were involved in a shooting of an armed fleeing suspect who was wanted on multiple felony charges.

The suspect was identified as Markevious DeAngelo Slaughter DOB: 7-20-1998, of Belle Glade.

Slaughter was operating a stolen vehicle from Palm Beach County and struck a civilian vehicle causing injury to the driver. Slaughter fled the crash and was being pursued by law enforcement in marked cars with lights and sirens activated.

Slaughter was approaching the city limits of Clewiston and the assistance of the Clewiston Police Department was requested in the apprehension of the fleeing fugitive.

Slaughter was traveling westbound on U.S. 27 attempting to elude law enforcement from three jurisdictions, crossing over the eastbound lanes, over a curb and pedestrian sidewalk, into the parking lot of First Bank located 300 East Sugarland Highway. Slaughter lost control of the stolen vehicle and crashed into the front of First Bank causing a substantial amount of damage.

Slaughter fled from the crashed vehicle armed with a semi-automatic handgun. Officers quickly surrounded the building.

A Clewiston Police Officer was confronted by the armed fleeing suspect on the south side of the building. The armed suspect was aggressively approaching the Clewiston Police Officer with the semi-automatic handgun pointed at him.

The Clewiston Police Officer fired his service weapon striking the armed suspect. The suspect was apprehended and treated on scene, later flown out to a trauma center.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) was called in to investigate the Officer Involved Shooting.
