HENDRY COUNTY — A county school bus carrying 10 children was struck just after 7 a.m. Tuesday by a 2001 Isuzu Rodeo SUV whose driver and up to four passengers fled the scene after the accident, according to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol.
Trooper S. Rongish said that the crash happened at the intersection of County Road 833 with CR 835 south of Clewiston when the Isuzu driver began to pass the school bus in a no-passing zone after its driver, 58-year-old Regina Wright of Clewiston, had activated her left turn signal at CR 835 and begun to make the turn. She noticed the other vehicle approaching, the report said, and Ms. Wright swerved to the right as the other driver did also, and the front of the SUV collided with the rear of the bus.
Neither Ms. Wright nor any of the schoolchildren was injured. Trooper Rongish reported that the Isuzu’s occupants all had fled on foot before he arrived at the scene; they were described as Hispanic men ranging in age.
Hendry County sheriff’s deputies also responded to assist in trying to locate the occupants of the SUV and its driver; however, no one was found in a search of the area.
Anyone who might have information regarding the crash or the SUV occupants is asked to contact Trooper Rongish at 239-938-1800.
