A semi-truck and charter bus collided early Friday morning on U.S. 27, sending one driver to the hospital and leaving the cab of the semi-truck nearly in pieces.
The incident occurred around 12:31 a.m. on U.S. 27 near County Road 835, according to a report released by the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP).
The semi-truck was traveling eastbound behind the charter bus on U.S. 27 and reportedly drove too close to the bus. The driver of the semi-truck, 61-year-old Ivan Jose Aymat Rios, of Zephyrhills, reportedly swerved to avoid a collision, but nonetheless hit the rear of the charter bus. As a result, the semi ran off the road onto the grassy median, while the charter bus came to a stop in the westbound lane of U.S. 27.
The driver of the bus, 46-year-old Mark St. Patrick Gordon, of Sunrise, Fla., and three adult passengers reportedly suffered no injuries as a result of the accident.
The driver of the semi was transported to Hendry Regional Medical Center with minor injuries. He was charged by FHP for careless driving, according to the report.
