Crews work to pull out the Nissan Altima that allegedly took police on a high-speed chase that ended in a canal on Magnolia Street.

A gas station dispute turned into a high-speed chase through a residential neighborhood on the north side of town, the Clewiston Police Department reports.

On Aug. 28 at around 8:43 p.m., officers were flagged down by a woman at the Marathon East gas station in Clewiston.

The woman asked officers to remove a man, identified as Tanorris Demetrius Rogers, 24, of Belle Glade, who she said attacked her and grabbed her by the throat at a gas station in South Bay, according to an arrest report released by the Clewiston Police Department.

Rogers, after providing identification, reportedly told officers he would leave on his own and tried to grab a black backpack from the woman’s vehicle. When the officer tried to stop Rogers from taking the backpack, Rogers reportedly said, “Oh look, it’s my cousin,” and took off towards a silver Nissan Altima.

The Altima, driven by an unidentified black male, headed across U.S. 27 and sped off down San Jose, according to the report.

Two officers pursued the Altima, which reportedly drove more than 60 miles per hour down Esperanza after turning off of San Jose.

The car reportedly swerved around a pickup truck stopped at an intersection and ran several stops signs during the roughly three-quarter mile pursuit.

The car chase came to an end when the Altima allegedly ran through the stop sign at the intersection of West Esperanza and Magnolia Street and crashed into a canal.

Officers reportedly saw both Rogers and the driver climb out of the submerged Altima and climb onto the west bank of the canal on Via del Aqua. The two reportedly ran into the 200 block of Via del Aqua and escaped police custody.

During the chase, officers reported that the black backpack had been thrown out of the Altima into a ditch at the intersection of San Jose and East Esperanza.

Officers recovered the backpack in which they reportedly found a fully loaded black Glock 22 handgun and two plastic baggies with 34.3 grams and 28.2 grams of marijuana inside.

A warrant was issued for the arrest of Rogers on charges of possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, resisting an officer without violence, possession of marijuana with intent to sell, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and fleeing and eluding police with disregard for public safety.

If the driver is identified he will be charged with fleeing and eluding police with disregard for public safety and leaving the scene of a crash with property damage, according to the report.
