Three women were killed when their vehicle slid into oncoming traffic on State Road 78 in Glades County on July 17, the Florida Highway Patrol reports. The incident occurred at around 1:50 p.m. near the intersection of S.R. 78 and County Road 78A (Ortona Road) in Moore Haven.
Diana Elizabeth Gallardo, 26, of Clewiston, Sonia Ruiz, 15, of Clewiston, and Rae Ann Reitz, 56, of Moore Haven, were fatally injured in the accident, according to a report released by highway patrol. Gallardo, who was driving at the time of the accident, reportedly lost control of her Chevrolet van after driving through a pool of standing water in the eastbound lane of S.R. 78.
The van began to rotate and struck a Mack dump truck that was traveling in the opposite direction. Both vehicles reportedly came to a stop in a water-filled ditch on the south shoulder of S.R. 78.
The report indicates that the accident was not alcohol related and that all three women were wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident. The driver of the dump truck, 57-year-old Elido Villavicencio Cale, of Lehigh Acres, reportedly suffered no injuries as a result of the accident and was also wearing his seatbelt.
