Traffic accident leaves woman in critical condition

CLEWISTON — A 62 year-old Clewiston woman is in critical condition due to injuries sustained after her car went into a canal on Wednesday, March 27.

A Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) stated that at approximately 10:05 p.m. a 2010 Toyota Corolla driven by Elizabeth Cruz was traveling south on County Road 833. Her vehicle traveled off the roadway onto the west grass shoulder. The Toyota traveled in a southwesterly direction on the shoulder. The vehicle entered a water filled canal and became totally submerged. The driver was extricated from the Toyota by a Hendry County Sheriff’s Deputy and the Montura Flaghole Fire Department.

Ms. Cruz was transported by Hendry County EMS to LaBelle and was transported by LeeFlight to Lee Memorial Hospital.

Charges are pending due to ongoing investigation.

Ms. Cruz was wearing her seatbelt.
