A woman was arrested yesterday in connection with the death of a 79-year-old Montura man.
Sheryl Denise Acevedo, 42, of Clewiston, was arrested on Jan. 4 and charged with first-degree murder, arson and tampering with physical evidence, according to a press release issued by Hendry County Sheriff’s Office.
The arrest comes two days after deputies responded to 151 Avenida Del Centro in Montura Ranch Estates in reference to a fire. Montura firefighters extinguished the flames and found a body inside the home, which was later identified as 79-year-old Federico Gomez.
Deputies reportedly spoke with a man, 69-year-old Reinaldo Cueves, who said he lived in a trailer behind Gomez’ home.
According to investigators, Cueves changed his story several times during interviews and when he was questioned about the inconsistencies, he reportedly became confrontational.
Investigators placed Cueves under arrest on Jan. 2 and charged him with obstruction of justice. He is currently being held at the Hendry County Jail on $1,500 bond.
On Jan. 4, investigators followed up with information they received allegedly identifying Acevedo as a suspect in the arson and death of Gomez. Investigators obtained an arrest warrant and picked up Acevedo at her home in Montura Ranch Estates.
After being interviewed by investigators, Acevedo was placed under arrest on charges of first-degree murder, arson and tampering with or fabricating physical evidence. She is currently being held without bond in the Hendry County Jail.
Further details regarding the incident have not been released by the sheriff’s office.
