CLEWISTON — The Central Elementary School (CES) Cubs want to congratulate their music teacher, Michaela Johnston Slamka, along with her quartet, for winning the crown at the 2018 International Women’s Barbershop Championship. Mrs. Slamka has been competing alongside of Mary Duncan, Hailey Parks and Heather Havens for the past four years at this competition, and persevered to the top spot, after receiving the Rising Stars award their first year, third place, and last year receiving second place. They beat out 48 international competing quartets in St. Louis, all while practicing over the weekends from four different states. Their message, among their harmonious songs throughout the weeklong competition, was to never give up. From the looks of their sparkling crowns, golden medals and trophies, they are proof that perseverance and hard work do pay off!
