A Clewiston man was arrested Jan. 18 on felony battery charges after a confrontation inside Mary Lou’s convenience store allegedly turned violent.
At around 10:46 a.m., Hendry County deputies responded to the incident.
On their way to the store, located on County Road 833, deputies received another call stating the victim was in a car with his three friends and needed an ambulance to meet them, according to an arrest report released by the Hendry County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies saw the car on their way to the store and stopped to assist the victim until the ambulance arrived and took him to Hendry Regional Medical Center.
Once at the store, deputies met with the manager and viewed the surveillance video that captured most of the alleged fight.
The video reportedly shows the victim pointing and saying something to the suspect, 28-year-old Daniel David Castro, on his way out of the store. Castro then reportedly approached the victim, who tried to punch Castro before being “scooped up” and wrestled onto the counter by Castro. Castro reportedly hit the victim several times in his right side while the victim was on the counter. The victim then bit Castro right before Castro picked him up and slammed him onto the ground.
According to the report, the video then shows the two fighting on the ground with Daniel on top. Shortly after the two begin fighting on the ground, the victim reportedly went limp while Castro continued to punch him, his head bouncing off the concrete floor as he was being hit.
The video then shows the victim being lifted up and slammed onto the ground a second time, his head hitting the concrete floor again, before everything stopped, according to the report. The report also states the video did not capture the entire fight, as both the victim and Castro leave the frame several times.
While deputies reviewed the video, they received a call from Castro’s mother who said her son wished to speak to them about the incident. Deputies traveled to Castro’s house, where he gave them an account of what happened. Castro’s account, according to the report, was as it happened in the video.
Castro was arrested and charged with aggravated battery causing bodily harm or disability.
At this point, no information has been released about the condition of the victim.
