Westside Elementary Kindergarten classes took a field trip the week of Oct. 8 to the Clewiston Fire Department to learn more about fire safety and prevention.

Oct. 4-10 was celebrated as Fire Safety Prevention Week. The key message of this year’s campaign was to install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside of each separate sleeping area and on every level of the home.

Roughly half of home fire deaths result from fires reported during the times when most people are asleep (between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m.), according to the National Fire Protection Association. Smoke alarms save lives.
