CHS Tigers prepare to play G.C. Raiders

The Clewiston Tigers are preparing to battle the Glades Central Raiders at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 22, at Glades Central High School in Belle Glade.

It’s been an unusual season for new Clewiston head coach Brad Garret, with multiple games canceled, rescheduled and delayed due to the weather.

“It feels like in my first year I’ve dealt with some pretty significant things,” explained Garret, “I had been with the team for five years before this and we only missed one game due to a hurricane, and that was last year. This year we’ve already had issues with three or four games due to weather. Now, as we get back to normal, our first game is against one of the biggest rivalries Clewiston’s ever had in Glades Central.”

The Tigers last played on Wednesday, Sept. 6, against LaBelle in a game that had to be moved up to avoid Hurricane Irma. This led to Clewiston having to play LaBelle after only an hour and a half of practice to prepare.

Despite the short prep time the Tigers dominated LaBelle, winning the game 35-0.

“I was confident going into that game that we could line up against LaBelle and do pretty good,” explained Garret, “And I don’t say that as any disrespect to LaBelle. We had athletes all over the place and we were just able to outmatch them. It’s not easy for any team to have to play on a Wednesday. Our guys were really ready to go, I was happy to get that first win out of the way.”

The Tigers will have a full week of practice to get ready for the Raiders. The rivarly had been one sided in Glades Central favor in the past years, with the Raiders winning four-of-the-last-five meetings between the teams.

In 2010 the Raiders shut out the Tigers, 55-0.

But last year Clewiston won 22-6. The Tiger defense came up huge in that game notching five sacks and three fumble recoveries.

Garret and his players hope to continue last year’s success against Glades Central and add another Tiger victory.
