Clewiston Sports News in Brief

• CLEWISTON – Clewiston defeated Moore Haven in a double overtime thriller last week in Moore Haven, 73-63, in high school basketball action on Tuesday, Dec. 6.
Alonzo Wargolet continued his strong season with 27 points and eight assists. Dagan Holloway added 23 points for the Tigers. Justin Eaves and Jaden Thompson contributed six points apiece.
Menta Jones had eight rebounds while Eaves and Thompson pulled down six rebounds apiece in the game.
The Tigers also defeated Lake Placid 55-42 in a road game last Thursday, Dec. 8, 55-42. Wargolet led balanced scoring with 11 points and Tyren Richardson added 10 points. Eaves, Thompson and Holloway each had six points and Jones had five points. Jones added five assists and five rebounds. Richardson and Charles Felton both pulled down eight rebounds. Coach Tim Carter said the Tigers didn’t play the best game of the year against Lake Placid. “We missed a lot of open shots but we will take the win,” he added.
• The Lady Tigers soccer team fell to Bishop Verot on Dec. 6, 4-1. Ashley Roth had 15 saves for the Tigers. Nicole Roth, a freshmen, scored the lone goal on a free kick. The junior varsity team lost at Bishop Verot 4-0.
The soccer squads rebounded quickly with a victory on Dec. 7 at Cape Coral. The varsity won 3-1. Kelsey Allison had two goals, Alayna Esparza one goal and Courtney Blanset an assist for the Lady Tigers. Lashayla Preston scored the game winner as the JV team prevailed 1-0. Coach Keri Alford said the team had some injuries and were also affected by the flu bug in last week’s matches.
The Lady Tigers tied Gateway Charter School 4-4 on Thursday, Dec. 8, in an offensive shootout. Several junior varsity players had to be pulled up due to injuries and sickness on the varsity. Coach Alford said she was very pleased with the overall effort. “We came out tired and beat up and overconfident and we struggled to keep the ball out of our defensive end,” she noted.  Ashley Roth again was strong in goal with 12 saves. Kelsey Allison scored all four goals for the Tigers. Esparza, Isabella Perez, Selinda Puentes and Megan Pittman all had assists for Clewiston.
“Hopefully the ladies learned a lot of lessons about the importance of the mentality they have when they step on the field. We hope we will carry this with us into next week’s games.”
• The Lady Tigers basketball team defeated Moore Haven at home last Tuesday, Dec. 6, by three in overtime. Alaysha Johnson had a big night with several key shots to help the Tigers keep the lead and their composure.
The Tigers lost at Lake Placid last Thursday, Dec. 8, 51-43. The Tigers were hurt by fouls in the game. Kayman Robinson and another starter both fouled out early in the game.
“We really lost the game at the free throw line,” Coach Alicia Bradberry noted, “We missed too many free throws at the end of the game and Lake Placid made their shots.”
Bradberry praised freshman Alaysha Johnson and Alexis Perez for their efforts as they played significant minutes and were productive.
“They were able to handle the pressure and they responded to the challenge positively,” she added.
