CLEWISTON – The Tigers (2-0) won the Harvest Bowl last Friday, Sept. 2 at Immokalee as the Indians missed a field goal by Alias Cuevas as time expired in a 20-17 Clewiston victory.
It was the Tigers’ fourth consecutive win over Immokalee. Charles Felton scored the winning touchdown for Clewiston. Trayquan Williams had 140 yards rushing on 25 carries and a four yard touchdown for the Tigers. Shedro Louis had a big game with a blocked punt that led to a touchdown for the Indians.
The Tigers fell behind 10-0 in the first half after Cuevas hit a 40 yard field goal and Fred Green ran for a short touchdown. Williams responded with his touchdown run and Jose Benitez added a 43 yard field goal as Clewiston tied the score at 10-10. Benitez gave the Tigers the lead in the third quarter with a 39 yard field goal. Malcolm Jackson put the Indians ahead with a one yard run midway through the fourth but a fumbled punt return led to Felton’s one yard run in the final minutes.
Indian quarterback RJ Rosales led the Indians to the Tiger 21 as the clock ran down but the last second field goal attempt sailed wide left.
This week the Tigers travel to Ft. Pierce to take on the Cobras who play in District 8A-8. The Cobras finished (6-3) last year and opened the season with a 24-0 win over cross town rival Westwood. The game had to be stopped due to violence and fights among fans at Lawnwood Stadium. The Cobras were off last week.
The Cobras missed the playoffs for the first time since 2008 last year and promptly made a coaching change, hiring Matt Helmerich out of Broward County. The Cobras also had five players sign Division I football scholarships last year.
This year’s Cobra squad is led by linebacker Ahmmad Butler, linebacker Jalen Mason and running back Jeremiah Hyde. The Cobras have used two QB Dan Vaughn and Brandon Stone. Wide receiver Kerwens Fils-Aime is the top receiving target. He caught 21 passes and scored four touchdowns last season.
The game is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 9, at 7 p.m. at Lawnwood Stadium at 1302 Virginia Avenue in Ft. Pierce.
