Clewiston wins cross country meet

CLEWISTON – The Clewiston High boys and girls cross country team won their home meet at the Clewiston Golf and Country Club on Aug. 29.

Coach Bryan Poepperling said it was a great event with a lot of competition and sportsmanship. He pointed out that Tiger runners ran to help a struggling Moore Haven boy, who was the last Terrier to pass the finish line.

“That is the spirit of competition and sportsmanship right in front of my eyes,” he admitted.

Chris Morales of Moore Haven was the individual winner in a time of 17:42.

Clewiston boys were led by Javier Del Rosario who finished third in a time of 18:48. Troy Evans was fifth in 19:05, Marco Figueroa was sixth in 20:02, David Adams finished seventh in 20:15, and Joel McCray finished in 10th place in 21:09.

Moore Haven was led by Delfino Mayorga who finished in fourth place at 18:53, Leonel Sagastume finished ninth at 20:51, PJ Carelona, 22nd place in 24:04, and Joe Perry, 26th place in 24:59.

Lake Placid was led by Scott Sigrist who finished in second place at 18:10 and Brandon Monroy who finished in eighth place at 20:45.

The Lady Tigers were led by Katelyn Bryant, the individual champion who finished in 24:26. Selena Gonzales finished second at 25:46, Guadalupe Duran finished fifth at 27:53, Jaylynn Moreno finished sixth at 27:59, and Carlisha Rush, finished eighth at 29:09.

Moore Haven was led by Stephanie Arande who finished third at 26:13, Yolanda Tapia, 11th place in 30:23, Cristian Toledo, 18th at 32:47, and Alyah Cardona, 26th place in 37:45.

Lake Placid was paced by Claire Phypers who finished in seventh place at 28:24 and Sarah Harris who finished in ninth place at 29:26.

The races were run with the threat of rain and thunderstorms.
