• CLEWISTON — Clewiston girls basketball defeated Lake Placid at home on Jan. 24 by the score of 44-38.

Coach Alicia Bradberry said the team used a 2-2-1 press to open an early lead and led 16-3 after the first quarter. “It was risky because we have a limited number of players to fill spots for tired girls but it was enough,” she explained afterward. The Tigers just played well enough to maintain the lead after the first quarter. “We didn’t’ need to do anything spectacular. We had very balanced scoring. All of the players contributed and we made it hard for their defense to focus on one player,” she added.

Kayman Robinson and Alaysha Johnson led Clewiston in points and Skakayla Hankins led the Lady Tigers in rebounds.

• The Clewiston Middle School boys basketball team remains undefeated this year with more than 10 games in the books. The Tigers beat Pemayetv Emahakv on Jan. 24, 61-21. They will compete in a conference tournament at the Brighton Reservation from Feb. 8-10.

• Clewiston boys basketball had mixed results last week. They lost at Hendry County rival LaBelle on Jan. 24, 60-43. Alonzo Wargolet had 13 points, Jaden Bryan had 12 points and five rebounds, and Tyren Richardson had five points and seven rebounds.

Coach Tim Carter said he was disappointed in the performance as it was a total team melt down on the court, “We are not playing good team basketball right now.”

Clewiston got a boost on Jan. 26 when they defeated Lake Placid on the road, 57-56. Bryan hit two free throws with three seconds left to win the game for the Tigers. Wargolet had 17 points and six assists. Klamenta Jones, who was named all-state in football last week, had seven points and five assists. Richardson had six points and five rebounds. Mau’jaun Carney and Charles Felton both had six points for Clewiston.

• The Tigers lost at Glades Central in a district game on Jan. 27, 73-55. The Lady Tigers soccer team advanced in the regionals with a 3-0 victory at Cardinal Mooney of Sarasota on Jan. 26. The Tigers had a rematch with district champion Oasis, an 8-0 winner over Sarasota Military Academy in the quarterfinals. The regional semifinal was held on Tuesday, Jan. 31 at Oasis High.

• Clewiston boys soccer lost to LaBelle on Jan. 24 by the score of 4-0 at the District 2A-12 tournament. The Tigers end the season with a record of (6-9-1). The Cowboys lost the District title game to Bishop Verot, 2-1.
