The Clewiston Tigers have worked hard through the summer and pre-season practice and are ready for a tough Kickoff Classic match-up with Charlotte High on Friday night at Cane Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m., which will be the new standard for Clewiston home games.
The Tigers were undefeated in the 2014 regular season before losing a heartbreaker to Cocoa in the state quarterfinal playoffs. This year’s squad has a lot of talent returning from the previous team but also has a lot of important holes to fill. Most notable concerns are along the offensive and defensive lines and in the receiving corps.
Tiger senior quarterback Davis Witt already holds the all-time passing record for Clewiston. Last season he completed over 57 percent of his throws for 1,490 yards and 18 touchdowns. Newcomer Reginald Henderson, a 6’4” flanker with speed, promises to add a lot of excitement to the Tiger passing game. Couple that with returning speedster Tyrin Summers and Witt should have some good receiving support.
The Tiger running game should be anchored by sophomore Menta Jones at tailback and senior Maurice Murphy at fullback. Both saw plenty of action last year with Jones averaging over 10 yards per carry and Murphy over eight. The Tiger defense will likely be anchored by Murphy’s linebacker play.
The Charlotte Fighting Tarpons are a Class 6A squad coming off a 7-4 season and should provide a good warm-up for the Class 4A Tigers.
