Tigers Roar Past Brahmans, 38-21

Clewiston capped off their season with a spirited 38-21 win against longtime 6A rival Okeechobee. The Tigers used all their weapons as they scored running, throwing and with a pick-six defensive touchdown. The victory evened their record at 5-5 while the loss for Okeechobee put them at 4-6.

The Tigers struck early with a 27 yard Colt Flynn field goal after their first offensive series ran out of downs. Senior tailback Tyrin Summers opened the drive with a 35 yard run, followed by a 21 yard smash by junior fullback Zachary Seale but the Brahmans defense stiffened and forced the kick.

On their following series, the Brahmans had a pass into the flats picked off by Tiger senior defensive end Andre Taylor who dashed 31 yards untouched for the touchdown. Colt Flynn contributed the extra point, as he did for the remainder of Tiger touchdowns on the night. Late in the first quarter, Clewiston scored again when Summers raced off tackle, turned on the speed, and covered 57 yards for the score.

The Brahmans’ Bubba Fludd picked up the following kickoff at his 8 yard line and ripped down the home sideline virtually untouched for a 92 yard touchdown to give the home crowd a little hope.

Clewiston came back with second quarter scores on a 22 yard Summers run up the middle and a 50 yard pass from senior quarterback Davis Witt to a leaping, and then racing, Reginald Henderson for 50 yards. The Tigers took a 31-7 lead to intermission.

The Brahmans scored with 5:41 left in the third period when Fludd passed to tight end Colton Smith for 15 yards. Then with only 54 seconds left in the game, Fludd threw a 39 yard pass to an uncovered Zeke Matthews for their final score. On the night, Fludd completed 4 of 7 passes with two touchdowns.

Clewiston got their final score of the season late in the third quarter when Witt hooked up with tight end Andre Taylor for 19 yards. Witt threw for 240 yards during the game, completing 8 of 10 attempts.

Defensively, the Tigers stout performance helped put the game away early with junior defensive end Jadan Thompson leading the charge with six solo tackles, an assist, a quarterback sack and two tackles for losses. Tiger head coach Pete Walker substituted freely in the second half with many of the Clewiston junior varsity players seeing their first varsity action.

The Tigers played the game without leading rusher sophomore Menta’ Jones and senior fullback/linebacker Maurice Murphy who had injuries from the previous week.

From a season perspective, Witt finished with 1,207 yards passing and 10 touchdowns and further solidified his place as the all-time leading passer in Tiger football. He entered the season having already eclipsed the previous record by 403 yards and ended his career with 3,848 yards. His 43 touchdown passes also beat the previous record by 18. His performance promises to be records that will stand for many years, perhaps forever, in Tiger football history.

Kicker Colt Flynn finished the year a perfect 40 for 40 on extra points. That is the best performance since current Tiger kicking coach Will Davis was 50 for 50 in 2006. Flynn also had 4 field goals on the year.

Tailback Menta’ Jones missed three games and was hampered by injuries in a couple more but still ended the year with 795 yards rushing and averaged 8.1 yards per carry.

On the year, the Tiger defense was led by the linebacker duo of seniors Teandre Johnson and Maurice Murphy. Johnson finished with 51 solo tackles and Murphy with 38.

The Tigers put an exclamation point on their season with this win but it wasn’t the season that the coaches, team and the fans had dreamed of a few months ago. The loss of Jones for the Pahokee and University games hurt and the Tigers were burned by big plays and penalties in games they lost. Other than the loss to Glades Central, any of the other four defeats could have just as easily been wins for the Tigers with a little luck. A total of 24 points was the loss margin in those four contests.
