Tigers swamp Somerset Academy, 54-0

The Tigers had no problems at Cane Field on Friday night as they rolled over a winless Panthers squad in a 54-0 district win. Running back Menta’ Jones scored three touchdowns and rushed for 78 yards in limited action.

The Tiger defense also made a huge contribution by putting 14 defensive points on the board.
The contest was played under a running clock after 7:56 was left in the first half, with the Tigers sporting a 37-point advantage.

Clewiston took the opening kickoff and moved 67 yards on eight plays, with Maurice Murphy covering the final 8 yards for the touchdown. Colt Flynn added the first of his 7 extra points. Murphy also had 22 yard smash during the drive, which had twice as many plays as any other scoring drives on the night.

The Panthers got a quick taste of what was in store when, on their third offensive play, Tiger safety Anthony Walker intercepted a pass from quarterback Justin Guevera and returned it 32 yards for the second Tiger score while the game clock had barely moved a minute.

After each team had a short drive and punts, the Tigers got the ball near midfield to begin the second period. Quarterback Davis Witt found flanker Reginald Henderson for 37 yards down the far sideline and he made it to the Panther 15 yard line before going out of bounds. Witt then ran a keeper around the right to the 1 and Menta’ Jones quickly covered that yard and it was 21-0.

Following another quick round of three and out series for each team, Clewiston was again near midfield. Jones rambled for 50 yards on a beautiful off tackle run, regaining his balance twice, and then got the remaining 5 yards on the next play. Tigers 28-0.

The Panthers were no doubt wondering what was coming next and it only took them one play to find out. A poor kickoff return put them at their 10 yard stripe and a bad snap to Guevera had him scrambling into the end zone to find the ball. But, Tiger linebacker Teandre Johnson showed up at about the same moment and tackled him for a safety, a 30-0 lead, and Somerset having to kick the ball back to Clewiston.

The Tigers got great field position on a short kickoff that rolled out of bounds at the Panthers’ 45. It only took one play for Witt to hook up with a racing wideout Tyrin Summers down the home sideline for a scoring pass, the score advancing to 37-0. Although a 35 point lead does not require a running clock until the second half, Somerset decided that a quicker start at that time was in their best interest.

Although the seconds were clicking off the scoreboard, the Panthers found that little protection as Tiger linebacker Zachary Seale scooped up a Panther fumble and trotted 17 yards to make it 44-zip. In seven minutes of clock time, and almost half of that consumed by a running clock, Clewiston has tallied up 30 second-quarter points.

The second half went quickly as the Tigers substituted freely. Colt Flynn nailed a 35 yard field goal in the third period and Jones, filling in at quarterback, had a 12 yard scamper in the fourth period to close out the scoring.

The Tiger defense was unrelenting against the Panther rushing game, which ended up with a negative 47 yards rushing on 17 plays. The defense also had a banner night scoring, with Walker’s pick-six return, Johnson’s tackle for a safety, and Seale’s fumble recovery jaunt. Johnson continued his stellar defensive play with seven solo tackles, an assist, two tackles for losses with one of those for the safety, and a quarterback sack.

Clewiston improved their season to 4-3 and evened the district record at 1-1. The Tigers’ roadmap for any playoff hopes became clear when Glades Central squeaked by University 41-38 in a barnburner at Dr. Effie Grear Stadium in Belle Glade. It’s all in the Tigers’ lap now. They must beat the Raiders when they travel there in two weeks and then win or place second in a rare three-way shootout with the Raiders and University, probably held at a neutral site.
