Track stars qualify for state

The Glades Central High School Lady Raiders 4×100 meter relay team qualified for state last week after a strong performance at the Region 2A-4 track meet on April 26 at Fort Lauderdale. The Raiders also had two boys qualify for the state finals, De’Markus Johnson in the 400 meters at 48.82 seconds and Ra’heem Alford in the high jump with a leap of 1.95 meters. The Raiders 4×400 meter relay team also qualified with a time of 3.16.96, good for second place in the region.

Antarus Johnson of Glades Day also qualified for state with a second place finish in the 100 meter hurdles as he finished in 15.97 seconds. Johnson also qualified in the triple jump with a distance of 12.61 meters. His regional meet was held in Orlando, April 28.

Pahokee had several girls qualify at the 1A-3 regional meet held on April 28 in Orlando. Lon’teria McFadden finished second in the 200 meters at 25.93, and Antwanique Kinsler won the 400 meters in 59.03 seconds. The Blue Devils 4×100 meter relay team also was the regional champion at 4:05.42.

The boys track team saw Tevaris Powell win the regional crown in the 200 meter dash at 22.74 seconds. Deonte Nelson qualified in the 400 meters with a second place finish in 50.74 seconds. John Charles finished third in the 400 meters at 51.56 and third in the high jump at 1.8 meters. Tyler Gilbert qualified in the 300 meter hurdles with a fourth place finish at 42.01 seconds and in the high jump at 1.8 meters, good for third place.

Ja’tarie Washington finished third in the long jump at 6.02 meters to qualify for state. Brian Crawford finished third in the shot put at 13.57 meters qualifying for state. Clewiston, Okeechobee and Moore Haven did not have a state qualifier this year The Clewiston High School Lady Tigers were paced by Sophia Connolly who finished seventh in the shot put at 9.54 meters, Mikalah Johnson who finished 11th in the 400 meters, Shanya Edwards who finished 13th in the 100 meters, and Tajany Gray who finished 11th in the discus.  The 4×100 meter relay team finished in ninth place. The regional was held April 27 in Tampa. Wellestey Madurie of Clewiston barely missed out on qualifying for state with a fifth place finish in the 100 meters at 10.8 seconds.  The 4×100 meter relay was fourth in preliminaries but slipped to seventh in the finals with a time of 44.47 seconds. Wilford Mcleod finished 11th in the shot put at 11.7 meters. Eric Hunter led Moore Haven with a 12th place finish in the 100 meters at 11.52 seconds, and a nine place finish in the 200 meters at 23.24 in the Class 1A-2 regional held April 27th in Largo. Hunter also finished sixth in the long jump at 6.37 meters. The boys 4×100 meter relay team finished 10th in the preliminaries. Okeechobee was led by Daniel Shelley who finished fifth in the 1,600 meters with a time of 4:38.90. Gerardo Saucedo finished ninth in the 3,200 meters at 10:43. Hunter Sills finished 10th in the two mile at 100:49.29. The boy’s 4×800 meter relay squad finished in sixth place at 8:34.71.

Eve Walker finished 16th in the shot put with a toss of 8.55 meters. Okeechobee’s regional was held April 28 at Miami Northwestern High. Highlights for Pahokee included Asia Wilson, who finished eighth in the 100 meters at 13.56 seconds, the 4×800 meter relay team which finished fifth at 10:51.06, Jada Dean who finished fifth in the high jump at 4.74 meters, Ashley Roberson who finished ninth in the long jump, and Clyana Ward who took eighth place in both the 400 meters and the long jump. The Blue Devil boys finished fifth in the 4×800 meter relay at 8:36.30. Washington finished fifth in the triple jump at 12.3 meters. Jermaine Roberson finished fifth in the long jump and Tyron Arnett finished sixth in the triple jump.  Crawford finished fifth in the discus throw at 38.81 meters. Michael Burack of Glades Day finished sixth in the 300 meter hurdles at 43.3 seconds. Markens Pierre finished eighth in the discus toss at 33.73 meters and fifth in the shot put at 13.39 meters.

Ti’Uana Louissaint finished seventh in the 100 meters at 12.65 seconds, and eighth in the 200 meters at 26.89 seconds for Glades Central. Dakedra Pompey finished seventh in the 200 meters at 25.98 seconds. Olmanika Milfort finished sixth in the 400 meters at 1:02.06, and Runelda Jackson took 12th in the 800 meters at 2:33.45. Christina Estinfort took 14th in the triple jump and Jahmya Philpart finished 15th in the long jump.

Felton Milner finished sixth in the 100 meters at 10.86 seconds, Jamarian Green took fifth in the 400 meters, and Jamar McClain finished fifth in the triple jump at 12.75 meters for the Glades Central boys track team.

The state finals will be held May 5-6 at IMG Academy in West Palm Beach.
